What this test measures
This test detects antibodies to herpes simplex virus (HSV), a common viral infection that affects millions of people. Understanding your results
Results are reported as index values, with values below 0.90-0.91 considered negative (no antibodies detected), values above 1.10 considered positive (antibodies detected), and values between 0.91-1.09 considered equivocal (unclear results that may require retesting). A positive result indicates previous exposure to HSV-1 or HSV-2 and doesn't necessarily mean you have an active infection, but rather that you have been exposed to the virus at some point. Your lab report will include specific reference ranges used by the laboratory that processed your sample.

What does a “Low” result mean?
A negative result indicates no current or previous infection with HSV-1 or HSV-2 has been detected. However, if you were recently exposed, antibodies may not yet be detectable, and retesting in 6-12 weeks may be recommended.
What does a “High” result mean?
A positive result indicates the presence of IgG antibodies specific to HSV-1 or HSV-2, suggesting previous exposure to the virus. This may mean you have had the infection for weeks, months, or even years, as antibodies can remain detectable for life once developed.
