What this test measures

This test detects antibodies to herpes simplex virus (HSV), a common viral infection that affects millions of people. The test specifically looks for IgG antibodies to both HSV-1 and HSV-2, which are proteins produced by the immune system in response to herpes exposure. HSV-1 typically causes oral herpes (cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth), while HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes, though both types can affect either oral or genital areas. Many people with herpes have no symptoms or very mild symptoms that may go unnoticed or be mistaken for other skin conditions.

The presence of IgG antibodies generally indicates past exposure to the virus, as these antibodies develop weeks to months after initial infection and remain detectable for life. After exposure, it may take 6 weeks to 3 months for antibody response to occur. This blood test can help determine your herpes status even when no symptoms are present, providing valuable information for understanding your sexual health and reducing transmission risk to partners.

Who should consider this test

You might consider this test if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Individuals experiencing recurring sores or blisters on the mouth, genitals, or other areas that may be herpes-related
  • People whose sexual partners have been diagnosed with herpes or have symptoms that could be herpes
  • Those wanting to understand their complete STD status, especially if they have multiple sexual partners
  • Individuals who have had unprotected sexual contact and want comprehensive testing for peace of mind
  • People experiencing symptoms like painful urination, unusual discharge, or flu-like symptoms with genital discomfort
  • Anyone seeking confidential testing without the need for an uncomfortable doctor visit or insurance involvement

Results are typically available within 1-3 business days and will be securely delivered to your online account.

Understanding your results

Results are reported as index values, with values below 0.90-0.91 considered negative (no antibodies detected), values above 1.10 considered positive (antibodies detected), and values between 0.91-1.09 considered equivocal (unclear results that may require retesting). A positive result indicates previous exposure to HSV-1 or HSV-2 and doesn't necessarily mean you have an active infection, but rather that you have been exposed to the virus at some point. Your lab report will include specific reference ranges used by the laboratory that processed your sample.

PopulationReference RangeNotes
HSV-1 IgGIndex <0.91: Negative, 0.91-1.09: Equivocal, ≥1.10: PositiveIndicates past exposure to HSV-1
HSV-2 IgGIndex <0.91: Negative, 0.91-1.09: Equivocal, ≥1.10: PositiveIndicates past exposure to HSV-2

Reference ranges shown are general guidelines. Your lab report will include the specific reference range used by the laboratory that processed your sample, which is the authoritative range for interpreting your results.

What does a “Low” result mean?

A negative result indicates no current or previous infection with HSV-1 or HSV-2 has been detected. However, if you were recently exposed, antibodies may not yet be detectable, and retesting in 6-12 weeks may be recommended.

What does a “High” result mean?

A positive result indicates the presence of IgG antibodies specific to HSV-1 or HSV-2, suggesting previous exposure to the virus. This may mean you have had the infection for weeks, months, or even years, as antibodies can remain detectable for life once developed.

Privacy & confidentiality

Your test results are delivered securely through your private online account and are never shared with employers, insurance companies, or government agencies. All testing is completely confidential and conducted at certified laboratories with strict privacy protocols.
