What this test measures

Chlamydia and gonorrhea are among the most common sexually transmitted infections in the United States, and most infections are asymptomatic, making screening important for preventing complications. This test uses nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) to detect the genetic material of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria in urine samples.

NAAT technology offers greatly expanded sensitivities of detection, usually well above 90%, while maintaining very high specificity, usually ≥99%. The test analyzes first-catch urine (the initial stream) to identify bacterial DNA or RNA, providing highly accurate results without the need for uncomfortable swab procedures. This test has a sensitivity rate of 99.8% and specificity of 99.3%, making it the gold standard for detecting these infections. The test can identify infections even when no symptoms are present, which is crucial since most chlamydial and gonococcal infections are asymptomatic.

Who should consider this test

You might consider this test if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Sexually active individuals who have had unprotected sex or want to verify their sexual health status
  • People with new sexual partners or multiple partners who want peace of mind
  • Those experiencing symptoms like unusual discharge, burning during urination, or pelvic pain
  • Individuals whose current or former partners have tested positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea
  • Anyone who has never been tested for STDs but is sexually active
  • People in committed relationships who want to confirm both partners are infection-free
  • Those preparing to start a new relationship and want to know their status

What to expect

Preparation

Avoid urinating for 1-2 hours before your test to ensure adequate bacterial concentration. No fasting, special diet, or other restrictions are needed. Continue taking any medications as prescribed unless specifically advised otherwise.

Sample Type

You'll provide a first-catch urine sample (the initial 20-30mL of your urine stream) in a sterile collection cup. The process is quick, private, and non-invasive - no uncomfortable swabbing required.

Collection

Walk into any participating lab location with a valid photo ID. No appointment is necessary. The friendly staff will provide you with a collection cup and private restroom facilities to collect your sample.

Turnaround

Results are typically available within 1-3 business days and will be securely delivered through your online patient portal or by phone, depending on your preference.

Understanding your results

A positive result indicates the presence of nucleic acid from Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae and strongly supports a diagnosis of chlamydial or gonorrheal infection. A negative result indicates that nucleic acid from these bacteria was not detected in the specimen. Since this test uses highly sensitive NAAT technology, results are reported as either "detected" or "not detected" rather than numerical values. Your lab report will include specific information about which organisms, if any, were found in your sample.

PopulationReference RangeNotes
All adultsNot DetectedNormal result - no bacterial genetic material found
All adultsDetectedPositive result - bacterial infection present, treatment needed

Reference ranges shown are general guidelines. Your lab report will include the specific reference range used by the laboratory that processed your sample, which is the authoritative range for interpreting your results.

What does a “Low” result mean?

A "not detected" result means no bacterial genetic material was found in your sample, suggesting you do not currently have these infections. However, a negative result does not exclude the possibility of infection if tested too early after exposure or if the infection is present at sites not tested by urine (such as throat or rectum).

What does a “High” result mean?

A "detected" result means bacterial genetic material was found in your sample, indicating an active chlamydia and/or gonorrhea infection. Both gonorrhea and chlamydia can be cured with the right medicine from your healthcare provider. Prompt treatment is important to prevent complications and reduce transmission risk.

Privacy & confidentiality

Your test results are completely confidential and delivered through a secure online portal or private phone consultation. Results are never shared with employers, insurance companies, or anyone else without your explicit consent. All testing is conducted with complete discretion to protect your privacy.
